It also was the departure for my work.  I heard it in college in a performance of Ntozake Shange’s choreopoem, For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf.  This performance by Alfre Woodard pushed it past inspiration and made it mine. 20 years later I’m finally going to make the work. It’s called Her Own Things.
